At Immanuel we offer two book club opportunities for our students.
Caldecott Club: 4K-Grade 3
We choose 20 books with strong possibilities for winning a Caldecott award. These books are then circulated throughout the classes, and the students vote each month on the ones they like best. At the end we take the favorites and have the kids do a final vote. Immanuel's Caldecott winner for the 2010-2011 school year was Chalk by Bill Thomson. Most of the students just enjoy reading great new books while the older students also learn a bit about illustrations and winning the Caldecott Award for unique and original illustrations.
Book Cravings: 6th-8th Grade
We meet about once a month before school at 7:45 to talk about the book we're reading (current themes that tend to be in this year's young adult novels, cultural issues, propaganda, etc.), do a fun activity that coincides with our book (trivia, short dramas, online games, online trivia searches, graphic novel illustrations, etc.), and of course have donuts and hot chocolate. For the 2010-2011 school year we had 13 student members and 4/5 adult members.
